One of my oldest1 and dearest2 friends here in the Bay Area3 has been holding a Groundhog Day celebration every year since the fateful Groundhog Day Y2K4. Each year he writes a new and different5 invitation and sends it to his friends. I like them. I think they are often6 funny. I figured I should put them down for posterity. Behid the cut, are the invitation letters he's sent out in the past7.

  1. Groundhog Day the First, when suddenly the term Y2K is sooo Twentieth Century.
  2. 2000 Feb 05
[Alas, I'm missing the first invitation.]

  3. Groundhog Day the Second, the last Groundhog Day of Our Innocence.
  4. 2001 Feb 03
    Hello everyone,
It's that time of year, and I think we've all been eagerly anticipating the coolest holiday of the year, trying to decide which party to go to. Well, this Groundhog's Day, I hope you'll come to mine.
For those who don't know, last year I started celebrating Groundhog's Day, and I hope to celebrate it for the rest of my years. On Groundhog's Day, we reflect on our lives, our accomplishments, our goals, and our friends. We let people know what's been important to us over the last year, and what we'd like to do in the next. Oh, and we watch the movie Groundhog's day on repeat for 24 hours straight, from 6am to 6am. Those are the traditions as they have been passed to us from when we did this last year.
This year, I'll be clearing out a second room for those who have had their fill of Groundhog's Day. In this room, we will be showing other movies that you've seen about a billion times. We've got a list, and as the day approaches, we'll get a schedule. If you've got suggestions, gimme. So if you get tired of watching GHD in French, you can always watch Star Wars
    another time.

Here's the vague schedule, slightly revised from last year:
6am-10am The hardline fanatics show up for the first few run throughs. I'll get some breakfast, and cheesecake from Cody's.
10am- 8pm Saner people show up, and we sit around kibitzing. We'll be well stocked with board games, and a sort of ongoing
serve yourself lunch/dinner thing. All of my _real_ friends will be here for the board games.
8pm- 2am A generic party begins. Social coherence fades. We expand the drinking game rules (Bing!) and experiment
with the language feature of the DVD. Drinks and refreshment abound.
2am- 6am Hardcore devotees watch the movie two more times. Social coherence returns, most other forms of coherence cease.

Feel free to bring along anyone you'd like. I have given up on trying to invite the proper number of people to balance being crowded into my apartment vs not having enough people. I've got two futons, and some goodly amount of floorspace so feel free to crash here. You know you want the bonus points for finishing out the set.

    See you then,
    Cy

  5. Groundhog Day the Third, 2002. The first actual Groundhog Observance
  6. 2002 Feb 02
    Rise and shine campers!
Don't forget your booties, 'cause it's coold out there today...

That's right, Groundhog's day approaches again, and that means a party, and 12 more notches in the old "How many times have you watched that movie" stick.

If you don't know, and you should, Groundhog day is an annual celebration of reflection which consists of me getting up at 6am, putting the DVD of the movie Groundhog Day on repeat, eating, playing games and partying with my friends, and then passing out at 6am the next day.

This year's celebration is very special because:
    1. It's actually Groundhog's Day! none of this following saturday crap.
    2. My roommate moved out, so I have a whole other room.
    3. 2/2/2 is quite the cool date.

Now, I realize many of you are going to be playing in sorcerous academy, and I accept that I can't playe :(, but come by afterwards and bring that crew.

In the decompression tank of a back room, i will be playing the third episode of trilogies to keep Groundhog Day from actually infesting your brain. Feel free to suggest good ones.

As always, here's and approximate outline of the day's events:

6am - 10am Cy, and a growing cadre of dedicated followers gather for the first showing, and planning the downfa No wait, nothing. Breakfast and cheesecake though...

10am - 8pm Sane, well adjusted people show up, and we play board games, chat, have lunch, generally interact with each other while watching the movie again and again and again.

8pm - 2am An actual party begins, people from SA show, the Groundhog's Day drinking game is undertaken. We watch it in french. We mute it and advanced students quote the entire movie. We MST3K it. Dear god, anything to make the tenth time interesting.

2am - 6am Must stay awake for final viewings. People being dropping like flies, and some semblance of normalcy returns.

So, bring along any of your friends, spread the evite hither and yon, and I hope to see you there.
Oh, one request this year: please don't bring any drugs, including pot. Alchohol is fine though, Chris. Thanks.

  7. Groundhog Day the Fourth, the Day of Columbia, STS 107.

Please note that I have made an executive decision this year to run the saturday before (the 1st) rather than the saturday after (the 8th.) You have been warned. Knocks on my door at 6am on the 8th will be met with silence.

If you don't know, and you should, Groundhog day is an annual celebration of reflection which consists of me getting up at 6am, putting the DVD of the movie Groundhog Day on repeat, eating, playing games and partying with my friends, and then passing out at 6am the next day.

This year marks the addition of quite a few new friends, and our first distributed Groundhog's Day, with webcams to our friends in Georgia (hi Heather and Terry!) and possibly elsewhere (hi Dan, Todd, and Exi.)

I haven't given proper thought to an adjunct theme, so watch this space for more info.

  9. Groundhog Day the Fifth, The Year That Something Happened.
  10. 2004 Feb 07
Winter, slumbering in the open air,
Wears on his smiling face a dream of spring.

The years, the 50 odd viewings, have begun to mingle, to stretch themselves out across time. We gather once again to bind ourselves to the past and the future with ritual.

That's right, Groundhog's day approaches again, and that means a party, and 12 more notches in the old "How many times have you watched that movie" stick.

  11. Groundhog Day the Sixth, the Sequel to Groundhog Day III, When Cornel West Snubbed the Groundhog.
  12. 2005 Feb 05
[I never got the Invite for GHDVI. I know I was there. Was I crashing? In any case, I did get the text of the invitation from the Source.]

Winter, slumbering in the open air,
wears on his smiling face, a dream of Spring.

Yes folks, it's almost New Years, which means it's almost Groundhog Day! My annual celebration of growth, reflection, history, friendship, an insane scheme followed through on, and a grueling test of my apartment's ability to produce alcohol from nooks and crannies on demand.

We will be celebrating in classic form, starting at 6am with a classic viewing of Groundhog Day, followed by Harold Ramis's classic Groundhog Day, then reviewing Bill Murray's laudable performance in Groundhog Day, then trying not to let Chris Elliott's presence bring down the wonderful Groundhog Day.

Then, about 4 in the afternoon, I'll slap in my DVD of Groundhog day.

...and we'll keep it on repeat until the next morning.

You know the drill, it'll be fun.
    Times:
6am - Staunch traditionalists arrive for the first viewing, and cheesecake.
10am - Others start trickling in for board games, kibitzing, generall lollygagging.
6pm - Something dinnery happens, we get in one good normal viewing where most people are paying attention.
8pm - Actual party folk begin arriving, re-hashing of the drinking game begins.
Midnight - Actual party folk begin passing out
4am - I'll be wishing I could pass out, but tradition *WILL* be upheld.
6am - Finally, the precious release of sleep.

For possible secondary theme, bring along the third movie in a trilogy.

As a reprieve of Groundhog Day III, we'll be applying the valuable lesson learned there: Alcohol only please. And, y'know, food and soda and such.

Bring along whoever you want. In fact, bring new people, I haven't met enough new people this year.

  13. Groundhog Day the Seventh, Rodent: the Foreshadowing.
  14. 2006 Feb 04
There's no way this Holiday is every going to end, as long as Cy keeps sending out evites.

He must be stopped, and you have to stop him.

Winter slides on, Christmas is in the air, which means Grounhog's day is semi-imminent. Gather yer No-Doze, me hearties, and meet me at 6am to continue the endless cycle of growth which we're only free of 364 days of the year. Perhaps this year we will achieve enlightenment! This year, I have been particularly lax in keeping in contact with people, so if I haven't talked to you in a while, you're ESPECIALLY invited.

If you have no idea what's going on: In 1999, I got a DVD player with a title repeat button. After some consideration, the only appropriate use we found was playing Groundhogs Day (a very meta- movie) on repeat, making it meta-meta-. Obviously, it would have to be on repeat from 6am-6am. A scheme formed for an annual party, to be repeated every year, making it META-META-META! I'm so deep. So Groundhogs' day plays all day. But mostly we drink, and chat and maybe game. It's a kind of post-holidays secular holiday to get your friends together. My friends that is, you can make up your own holiday.

1 But he's not old, he's not even thirty-seven.
2 Still, I've known him longer than almost anyone else around here.
3 That is, people I've met since I moved down to East Bay from points north.
4 That was the year we had to run the TV and DVD player on a bicycle-powered generator, and celebrate by candlelight because the power plants had all succumbed to the Y2K bug. You remember, don't you?
5 There is no footnote number 5.
6 Dictionary.com defines often as 'many times; frequently.' That's close enough.
7 Seven footnotes in honor of GHDVII.

So that's that. Please feel free to post your recollections of Groundhog Days past, predictions for Groundhog Days future, questions or even non-sequiturs (just so long as they're sufficiently meta). Let the Groundhogging commence!
Music:: I've Got You, Babe, by Sonny and Cher

I missed most of the GHD's, although I did go one memorable year when I took the parent's car, had to return it because Dad needed it to get to work, Cy followed me across the Bay Bridge, and took me back. That year kicked ass.

And as a non-MMORPGer, I don't get the whole 'meta' thing.
