It occurs to me that the students who today ask why their work wasn't graded over the weekend, are the same people who, ten years hence, will complain how teachers have it easy because they only work six hours a day.

They also probably try to get extensions for deadlines that were clearly given in the beginning of the semester (or is that college students?).

I love to have a math lesson when that question comes up. It starts with "how much time would you like me to spend on your assignment?" and ends with multiplication to figure out how much overtime the student would like me to work.

Not if you educate them now! I think it would be great if more teachers explained to students just how much of their time is spent in service to them -- I was not made aware of it until junior high school, when a teacher just gave us about a 2-minute talk at the beginning of the school year that outlined his weekly schedule. It was in the context of "please turn things in on time, and this is why I will not accept late things" but it also served as a humanizing experience that not many people have that young, if ever.
