(no longer)[Not Erica filter]

(Taking a short break from the final miles of the old thesis marathon.)

I want to do something nice for Erica (actually, several things, but this is one of them). She really wants a haircut, but she is wary of what some SuperCuts yahoo (for example) might do to her hair, and she doesn't know who she can trust among the many stylists out there.

Can anyone offer recommendations for AWESOME stylists? Money is no object (more or less, this is a big gift), but I am looking specifically for someone in the Bay Area who does curly hair exceptionally well. Would be great if they were also NO-POO positive, and generally Curly Girl Approved. There's got to be somebody, right? Six million people in the BA, and somebody has to be doing curly!?

Can I get some recommendations? I'd like to surprise Erica with a Card and a Reservation, especially if I can get it before Erica's folks come out west.

Also: Incidentally, someone out there on the nets has my copy of Lorraine Massey's Curly Girl, but I don't remember who. Does anyone know?

Ok. Walk around a bit, and then back to the thesis. I'm on the final stretch. I can see the finish line from here.

This is changinganswers posting on lurkingowl's thing but I wanted to say I spoke with some very curly haired friends and they HIGHLY recommend Jessica or Veronica at Vero Salon on College Ave near Claremont. Jessica is apparently a curly haired whiz, and Veronica listens to her clients. Also, you generally get a nice scalp massage when you get a cut there :-)

Miriam swears by Madu Salon in SF-- They are curly hair specialists, Their DIVA cuts are no-poo dry cut- also I think they are between $90-120-- so that's bit steep.

TOTALLY RECOMMENDED AND SECONDED.

They really impressed Miriam - and as Erica has curly hair they really are the best - complete specialists. They are trained by the people that wrote the CurlyGirl book.

Miriam sees Ginger, Rachel sees Ivy, but there is no-one there that isn't good.

Miriam and Rachel are going on the 9th, and she really wouldn't trust anyone else with her hair now - that are that good.

Plus - they are really easy to get to (in SF). Plus they are right next to a really nice Deli.

oh - and about $70-80 for a haircut, more if you want color (obviously) but you get what you pay for.

I really like Emma at Backstage Salon in SF, but she definitely uses shampoo and conditioner. She knows how to cut curly hair so it's flattering, though. Sometimes she uses too much product when I'm done, but it's always fine after I've washed it. Plus, she sings in a Russian band and is very liberal, so she's great fun to talk with. I'm going to have an appointment with her when I get into town.

If I had heard of some of the people other folks list, I would have been interested in trying them, but all my haircut experiences in Berkeley were terrible. Some friends went to Emma and looked great, I went to her and have been happy.

They have a webpage, but it has annoying music:

My stylist, Christopher, kicks major ass. Plus, he is terribly entertaining. Cut, highlights, and styling can cost approximately $180, and is worth every penny.

He works out of the Pure Beauty salon on Haight street. I would suggest talking to him.

Good luck!

I know [personal profile] funcrunch goes to MeduSalon, which is where we all found out about the Curly Girl book and stopped putting shampoo in our hair. I have a curly-haired hairdresser who has cut my hair for over a decade -- Kelli Leyba. I know she has a web page somewhere, but Google can't seem to find it. She does massage and stuff, too, and she'll come to your house to do your hair. Her information is as follows:
