Whoa! That was a lot of work.

Just back at work from KublaCon. No time to post when I dragged my sorry self home last night because between the ride home from KC and the actual getting home, we detoured to a lovely birthday party where the host and guest-of-honor was simultaneously [livejournal.com profile] rissymonster. The food very tasty, and the company was great fun. Would that I could have gotten earlier and stayed later.

I'm still rather bushed, though a second full night's sleep should go a long way toward my return to restfulness. I hope to see about a third, a fourth, and maybe even a fifth before I stop with the nice restful sleep thing.

I have more specific con thoughts, but I need to organize them, and need to be more alert before I can start with the organizing. I'll try to get in a post or two within the next day or so. I also look forward to hearing about other peoples' experiences at KublaCon.

Also, I started my History 32 class today. I expect it will also be good fun, if a bit rigorous, but I expected it to be so, trying to compress 18 weeks into 14 days. On the upside, I expected I should have to spend each entire weekend working on papers, but it turns out not to be so, so I'm very happy that I don't have to. There will be lots of reading, but we won't have a semester worth of papers to crank out as well. I'm grateful to Dr. Rose for recognizing that ti would be nigh impossible, and pleased that he designed the class that way.

He does want me to keep a journal, consisting of my notes, reflections on the readings, and critiques of any of the media we see. I imagine much of it will end up here, on the way to being turned into a journal suitable for submission to the professor at the end of the class. I surely don't want to send it to him hand-written (aghast).

Ok, back to work for me. Cheers, all.

p.s. If you went, did you have a good time at KublaCon?

Welcome back! I had a fun time at KC, yes. Thanks for making me go! :)

The Khan of Cons!

The Con was sweet! A bit disorienting to a newbie as to where everything is, but there's not much to be done about that more than you already had - although, perhaps a map blown-up, foam-core mounted, and hung over the back of the reg table?

Got into three, maybe four offical games - plenty by my standards! There were certainly lots of events and plenty of choices as to what to do. Quick thoughts off the top of my head (as I need some tea)...

1) Any chance dividers could be put between those -A and -B games? Sharing a room with two games going on makes for lots of cross-talk, and having some sort of sound buffer could be handy.

2) The Weight System, I think, works well all told. My concern was for those, like GMs and volunteers, who'd like to get into a specific game during certain sessions. Having a starting lower weight in the beginning's great for getting into session 1, 2 and 3 games, but if you did get into those games, it makes it more difficult to get into, say, a session 6 game that you're really interested in. You could just *not* sign up for the previous sessions, but that's a bit extreme.

My suggestion is to allow GMs or volunteers to apply a "favored" session, i.e. be able to allot their starting weight "reduction" of 200 (or whatever) to a session, or spread them through a few sessions of their chosing. This'd be incredibly handy for those who're only staying around for a few days of the Con, or have to skip out for a day because of other obligations. That, or if they don't have a favored session, they could apply it evenly across the sessions they'd prefer to get into.

Anyhow, glad to hear you survived! It was great, and it has inspired me to write up some "modules" so that I'll be prepared to run a variety of games next year.

Priority points have been used in the past but I think they caused a lot of extra busy work as the computer system didn't incorporate them well (so there was a computer sign up for normal sign ups and a manual sign up if you wanted to use priority points). I could be remember it wrong, but I know that for the last two Kublas I ended up giving away my priority points because there wasn't anything specific that I wanted to use them on. Personally, as a GM I was pretty happy with this year's method.

Yeah, except for being called the new Emily. :P

The con was as much as I'd hoped it would be. I didn't get to spend a lot of money on a game because nobody had it, but I did play more Diplomacy than I have in a long time. It was nice to see you and [livejournal.com profile] ca_snowflake!

A thought on the class-related journal -- you could create a free LJ specifically for the project, then use something like http://www.ljbook.com/ to bundle it up nice and neat for your professor. No worries about your professor reading anything they shouldn't, low maintenance all around.

Exactly what I was getting ready to suggest re: the History journal. I did the same thing for a stupid culturejamming project in my Critical Thinking class (well, I gave him a link to the LJ and a hard copy) and the instructor loved it.

Cool, now I just need to figure out a good name. I wonder if promises2keep is already taken.

I had a great time. I'll be back next year. :)

Working on my write up

[identity profile] seannittner.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still working on my write up. I had such a blast at Kubla this year that I really want to document as much of it as a I can. Yep, that will probably mean a 10 page post that only I will ever read, but that is okay with me.

Rich Taylor and Rasilind Newport both have their reviews up at their respective LJs and at the Good Omens Site and mine will be there soon.
