I would like to see this abridged document. It's possible to cut out so much of something that it becomes very difficult to recognize in its original form. Remove 70% of the Declaration and I think that a lot of people could quite reasonably be expected not to recognize it. For instance, the entire first paragraph would have to go, the whole last paragraph, and (for me not to recognize it) all the references to "he" which make up the bulk of the document, and the language would have to be recast to today's english. No "shewn" or anything like that. The format would also have to be radically altered.
I am also interested in seeing the sample questions the study group gave to see if the questions were leading or not. I don't think the Declaration is all that subversive - it was meant to be an open letter preceeding war, after all - and I have to be wary of anything that says "a high percentage of people stated these specific things." For example, a high percentage of women put to the test in Renaissance Europe claimed the Devil had a cold phallus. That was because Sprenger instructed his torturers to ask that specific question - "is the Devil's phallus cold?" It does not mean the Devil even exists. It just meant people answered "yes" or "no" to a question, not gave their actual opinion.
I don't think Americans are as stupid as we like to think they are.
